Bhai Bij 2026 Wishes in Gujarati & English: 101 Messages for Brother & Sister, Tilak Muhurat

Bhai Bij 2026 is on Wednesday, 11 November 2026 in India and Australia. The tilak muhurat in Surat is 1:31 PM to 3:45 PM (Shubh Panchang) and in New Delhi 1:10 PM to 3:20 PM (Drik Panchang). In the USA, UK and Canada, Bhai Bij falls a day earlier, on Tuesday, 10 November.

Bhai Bij (ભાઈબીજ) closes the Diwali festival. On Kartak Sud Bij, the second day of the Gujarati New Year, brothers visit their sisters’ homes. The sister does tilak and aarti, serves her brother’s favourite meal and prays for his long life, and the brother promises to stand by her and brings a gift.

Below you will find the Bhai Bij 2026 muhurat, dates for Gujaratis in Australia and other countries, the stories and the tilak vidhi, and 101 Bhai Bij wishes in Gujarati with English translation, from sister to brother, brother to sister, and more.

Bhai Bij for Gujaratis in Australia

  • Date: Wednesday, 11 November, the same as India.
  • Tilak time: Dwitiya runs until 6:23 PM in Perth and 9:23 PM in Sydney and Melbourne on Wednesday, so an early-to-mid afternoon tilak at local time falls well within it.
  • A work day: Wednesday is a normal working day, so many families do the tilak at lunchtime or straight after work, then share the Bhai Bij meal in the evening.
  • Siblings in India: your Wednesday afternoon is late morning in India (1 PM in Sydney is 7:30 AM in India; 1 PM in Perth is 10:30 AM). Plan a video-call tilak for when it suits both of you.

Why Bhai Bij is celebrated

  • Yamraj and Yamuna: Yamraj, the god of death, visited his sister Yamuna (Yami) on this day after a long time. She welcomed him with tilak and a meal, and he blessed that any brother who visits his sister’s home on this day will be free from the fear of untimely death. That’s why the day is also called Yama Dwitiya.
  • Shri Krishna and Subhadra: after defeating Narakasura, Shri Krishna visited his sister Subhadra, who welcomed him with a tilak, flowers and sweets.
  • The Jain story: after Bhagwan Mahavir’s nirvana on Diwali, his grieving elder brother, King Nandivardhan, was comforted by their sister Sudarshana. Jain families also remember this on Bhai Bij.

How Gujaratis celebrate Bhai Bij

  • The brother goes to the sister: in many Gujarati families the brother eats at his sister’s home on Bhai Bij rather than his own, as Yamraj did at Yamuna’s.
  • Tilak and aarti: the sister seats her brother on a pat, does tilak with kanku and chokha, ties a nadachhadi in some homes, does aarti with a diyo and feeds him a sweet.
  • The Bhai Bij meal: a festive thali of the brother’s favourites, usually with a sweet like shiro, lapsi or basundi.
  • Gifts: the brother gives his sister a gift or cash and promises to protect and support her.

Bhai Bij tilak vidhi at home

Thali: kanku, chokha, a diyo, a sweet, a coconut or dry fruit, flowers, and nadachhadi (sacred thread) if your family uses it.

  1. Seat your brother facing north or east on a pat or clean cloth, with a handkerchief or cap on his head if that is your family custom.
  2. Apply a kanku tilak on his forehead and press a few grains of chokha onto it.
  3. Do his aarti with the diyo and pray for his long life and well-being.
  4. Feed him a sweet and give him the coconut or dry fruit.
  5. Serve the Bhai Bij meal. The brother then gives his gift and blessings.

Gift ideas: jewellery or a silver coin, a sari or kurta, a book or gadget she has wanted, a framed childhood photo of the two of you, or simply an experience together, like a family meal out.

Tips for sending Bhai Bij wishes

  • Send your wish in the morning, before the tilak, so it builds up to the visit.
  • If you can’t meet, do the tilak on a video call during the afternoon muhurat, and send a gift online.
  • Use 1–20 if you’re the sister, 21–40 if you’re the brother, and the short ones (56–70) as your WhatsApp status.
  • Don’t forget bhabhi, jijaji and cousins (49–55 and 79–84). They’re family too.
